Kantnagar Temple is an eighteenth century brick temple. The temple is located at Kantnagar, a quiet secluded village on the banks of the river Dhepa, about 12 miles north of Dinajpur city and about a mile west of the Dinajpur-Tetlia road. One of the reasons for the uniqueness of this temple, which is famous among the architectures of Bengal, is that the mythological stories have been painted on the walls in terracotta ornaments. The original nine peaks from the pinnacle of this Navaratna or ‘nine peaks’ Hindu temple were destroyed in the earthquake of 1897. The temple has examples of the finest terracotta art of Bangladesh.

Doubts about the date of construction of the temple were removed from a chronological inscription in Sanskrit attached to the foundation wall of the eastern corner of the temple. According to sources, Maharaja Prannath of Dinajpur started the construction of the temple in 1822 and Maharaja Ramnath, the adopted son of the Maharaja, completed the construction of the temple in 164 (1852) on the orders of his wife Rukmini. However, by the beginning of the twentieth century, Maharaja Girijanath Bahadur had extensively rebuilt the temple, except for the nine peaks that had been destroyed.
