Horticulture and a natural way of living

Last year was a special time for my wife Julia and I as we were finally able to realise a dream. Ever since meeting each other we had decided that one day we would go back to the country and make a "smallholding", a small farm to grow fruits, vegetables and flowers. A neighbour in our village was kind to let us work on her land so in April 2020 we began to build our small vegetable plot and flower garden.

It was hard work to begin with as we needed to move a lot of soil and create new planting areas for all of our plants. Some of our plants were germinated at home before planting out, others were directly sown onto the soil. We grouped our plants together so that similar plants shared the same space. My father helped me to build a "brassica cage" for our cabbages, cauliflower and chard to protect them from caterpillars and other pests.

We started off with a small plastic tent greenhouse to grow our vulnerable plants like tomatoes, cucumbers and melons. Julia loves to grow flowers, eventually we plan to have a field of flowers where people can come and pick their own bouquets. Julia likes to grow sweet peas for their delicate flowers. She used bamboo "obelisks" to support them as they grew.

We had a very successful year and have many plans for 2021. We look forward to showing you our garden as it grows this year!
