On the occasion of World Rivers Day, a human chain program was celebrated in Kaliganj on the initiative of Green Voice
Green Voice, the first environmental youth organization in Bangladesh, organized a human chain program near the bridge of Chitra river in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah. The theme of this year's River Day is pollution free river, healthy life. Md. Jahangir Alam, coordinator of Jhenaidah district branch of Green Voice, said that Bangladesh is a riverine country in South Asia. About 600 rivers, including tributaries, have flowed through the country, occupying a vast area of 24,140 km. Most of the industries built on the banks of the rivers are dumping their waste without treating it. Factories have waste treatment plants but most of them are not being operated. Excessive fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture are also being washed away with irrigation water and falling into the river. This river is also the biggest source of household waste in the hatbazar, urban and slum areas.
