Este paraje natural está protegido en ambos países por sendos parques nacionales, la figura de máxima protección ambiental: el Parque Nacional Iguazú en Argentina y el Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, en Brasil. El territorio protegido asciende a 250.000 hectáreas de bosque subtropical.

Es Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco desde 1984 en su parte argentina y desde 1986, también su parte brasileña.
